Creating a new musical, in a new way.
Creating a new musical, in a new way.
Musical theatre is one of the most collaborative art forms. So what happens when theatre artists work without a net? When twelve artists of wildly different backgrounds start to work on a musical with no script, no score, and only a set of short stories by a relatively obscure Russian satirist as their starting point? What happens when the usual constraints of theatre production – the boundaries usually set by the authors' or director's vision – are taken off?
Talk Is Free Theatre will premiere a new musical, Scenes from the Bathhouse. In creating this work, a company of actors collectively improvised the book of a musical, working with the composer & lyricist team together in real time.
The team drew their inspiration from Mikhail Zoschenko's comical short stories, which dwelt on the mundane and somewhat absurd problems of the day, but occasionally skirted forbidden political topics. These stories appeared in daily newspapers and were read by millions in the Soviet Union during the 1920's and 30's, making Zoschenko the most widely read satirist of the 20th Century.
"Although our approach to this musical's creation removed the conventional role of a writer, we believe that this process helped unify all of the creative elements in a collaborative, integrated fashion, instead of having the musical pass through several hands in a typically long period of development", says Artistic Producer Arkady Spivak. "We feel that this new process was important to be reminded that musical theatre is, at its core, a collaborative art form that has an obligation to explore serious things".
Scenes from the Bathhouse stars Adrian Marchuk (Frankie Valli in Toronto's Jersey Boys), Shannon Taylor (National Arts Centre, Theatre Calgary), John-Michael Scapin (finalist of Triple Sensations in its inaugural season), long time TIFT ensemble member Milosh Rodic, Alex Dvorak and Leanne Miller.
The score is written by Colleen Dauncey (music) and Akiva Romer-Segal (lyrics). Direction is by Aleksandar Lukac (The Inspector General, The Tale of Ivan vs. Ivan), Sets and Costumes are designed by Katherine Salnek and Lighting Designer is Sandra Marcroft. Assistant Director is David Dodsley.
Scenes from the Bathhouse runs at the Mady Centre for the Performing Arts at 1 Dunlop St. West in Barrie. It previews on May 23, opens on May 24 and runs to June 1 (Wednesday to Saturday at 8pm and Saturday, June 1 at 2pm). Tickets are $33 plus HST and service fee, available at www.tift.ca, by calling (705) 792-1949 or in person at the Mady Centre for the Performing Arts.

An European transfer, a national co-production and a re-imagined classic are on tap for TIFT's 12th Season.
A transfer of this season's production of Possible Worlds to Munich, Germany, a co-production of the haunting musical Floyd Collins and a new conceptual adaptation of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet set in a retirement home are among the highlights. Today Artistic Producer Arkady Spivak announced details of the upcoming season for Talk Is Free Theatre (TIFT), which sees the company producing a wide range of new and re-imagined material in Barrie, Ontario and beyond.
The 2013-2014 Season will begin with a transfer of the current season's production of Possible Worlds by John Mighton, directed by Mitchell Cushman, to BeMe Theatre's John Mighton Festival in Munich, Germany in October, 2013.
On the home front in Barrie, Ontario, the season will be launched with The Sneeze by Anton Chekhov, translated and adapted by Michael Frayn (Noises Off, Copenhagen). The collage evening will include material Chekhov wrote for the stage, pieces he adapted to the stage himself and Chekhov stories adapted by Michael Frayne for the stage. These hilarious short "vaudevilles" are the brief glimpses into human folly, adversity, eccentricity, ego and exasperation. Directed by Marti Maraden and starring Lucy Peacock, it will run from November 28 to December 7, 2013.
The Last of Romeo and Juliet, a conceptual adaptation of Shakespeare's tragedy will be set in a Canadian retirement home. Romeo & Juliet has become synonymous with the idea of forbidden love, love that is not condoned by society. In Shakespeare's day, young teenagers may not have been in control of their own sexual destinies, but now today it is our oldest generation for whom new love is taboo. In our version, Romeo and Juliet will be played by actors in their 70s whereas their parents will be played by actors of the biological age to be their children. Through this relocating of Shakespeare's text, the production will explore the "fated powerlessness" and subject of "old love", which can feel more impossible and just as star-crossed as that experienced by Romeo and Juliet. Directed by Mitchell Cushman, this production will run from January 9 to 18, 2014.
The Wakowski Brothers – A Canadian Vaudeville with book, lyrics and music by Wesley J. Colford, will be given the world premiere after the pervious version's successful run at the Toronto Fringe Festival in 2012. Eight years after splitting their act, Canadian Vaudeville legends Jimmy and Conrad Wakowski reunite for a one night tribute performance. As the night goes on, original skits and songs bring old demons to the surface. Jimmy's ex-wife Caitlyn joins them as painful memories and past betrayals conspire to destroy the attempt to rebuild their shattered relationship. Directed by Richard Ouzounian, The Wakowski Brothers will be performed from March 20 to March 29, 2014.
The haunting contemporary musical Floyd Collins, with music and lyrics by Adam Guettel, book and additional lyrics by Tina Landau and directed by Peter Jorgensen, in co-production with Vancouver's Patrick Street Productions, will play from April 10-19, 2014. In 1925, while chasing a dream of fame and fortune by turning a Kentucky cave into a tourist attraction, Floyd Collins himself became the attraction when he got trapped 200 feet underground. One of the most acclaimed in recent years, this revolutionary musical tells the transcendent tale of a true American dreamer.
Miss Caledonia, written and performed by Melody A. Johnson, will round off the home season playing between May 23 and 31, 2014. Desperate to escape the stall-cleaning, hay-baling drudgery of 1950's life on Rural Route 2, Peggy Ann Douglas dreams of becoming a movie star. Can she sing, twirl and pivot her way into the hearts of the pageant judges to set her on her path?
Other activities of the organization next season will include the inaugural Barrie Comedy Festival running from September 19 to 21, 2013; a brief one day appearance on October 2, 2013 of Hawk from Halifax's Onelight Theatre and the US tour of Tales of an Urban Indian by Darrell Dennis, staged on a moving bus, in 2014. Additionally, Richard Ouzounian's adaptation of Great Expectations, based on the TIFT world premiere production, will be seen around Ontario next season.
New work development initiatives will include an original piece written by Kristen Thomson and directed by Chris Abraham in co-commission with Crow's Theatre; an adaptation of Heinrich von Kleist's The Prince of Homburg, directed by James Kudelka; and a musical version of Moll Flanders, written by Leslie Arden.
Early-bird rates for subscriptions and 4-ticket passes for the 2013-2014 season are available until May 31, 2013. Single tickets are available from August 1, 2013. For more information, please visit www.tift.ca or call (705) 792-1949. All performances are held at the Mady Centre for the Performing Arts, 1 Dunlop St. West in Barrie, Ontario.

A national tour, re-imagining of a Broadway musical, two Canadian classics and a world premiere musical are on tap for TIFT’s 11th Season.
April 10, 2012. Barrie, ON... Today Artistic Producer Arkady Spivak announced the details of the upcoming season for Talk Is Free Theatre (TIFT), which sees the ensemble-driven company continuing its policy of mounting a wide range of new and re-imagined material in Barrie, Ontario and beyond.
A cross gendered version of Guys and Dolls, a musical with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser and book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows based on Damon Ranyon’s stories, directed by Richard Ouzounian will play from November 15 to 24, 2012. On the surface Guys and Dolls is an amusing urban fairytale musical about gangsters and showgirls. Below the surface, however, the musical reveals that roles were changing in society and the women would be increasingly taking charge in the decades ahead. What better way to show this than by having the entire cast played by the opposite of the conventional sexual roles: women as "guys" and men as "dolls"?
Following Guys and Dolls, TIFT will present Axis Theatre Company’s The Number 14. The brainchild of Wayne Specht along with Roy Surette, this special engagement is part of the show’s 20th Anniversary international tour. In an amazing theatrical tour-de-force, six of finest performers strut, swing, sing and talk their way in and out of adventures aboard Vancouver’s #14 bus that is part Monty Pythonesque, part Mr. Bean and wholly engaging. The Number 14 will play for three performances only on February 7, 8 and 9, 2013.
Possible Worlds by John Mighton and directed by Mitchell Cushman will continue the season. Part murder mystery, part science-fiction, and part mathematical philosophy, this play follows the multiple parallel lives of the mysterious George Barber. At the play's beginning, George is found dead, with his brain missing. Two detectives set out to uncover the truth behind his grisly death, and stumble upon several strange characters. Possible Worlds will play from April 11 to 21, 2013.
The season will conclude with the world premiere musical Dead Souls, adapted from the epic satirical novel by Nikolai Gogol. In provincial nineteenth century Russia, the serfs are known as "souls" in the harsh system, and landowners must pay taxes on the souls that they own. The trouble for landowners comes in the form of "dead souls," or serfs whose deaths have not yet been recorded in the census. Although dead, these souls cost just as much in taxes as any others. In Gogol's amusing tale, a smart but poor young man, Chichikov, hatches a grim scheme to build his fortune through "dead souls," buying them off of the landowners in order to fool the local town into thinking he is a man of considerable property. The musical will be developed by the ensemble who will create the book using entirely improvisational techniques and will be assisted by the real-time presence of a lyricist and composer. Directed by Aleksandar Lukac, this experimental production will run from May 23 to June 2, 2013.
Talk Is Free Theatre will also present a special fundraising performance - Jeff Madden - LIVE - "My Life In Song".Jeff Madden, member of the TIFT ensemble and the Dora-Award Winning Star of Jersey Boys as 'Frankie Valli' in Toronto and Sydney, Australia, performs in an intimate Cabaret-styled Concert. In this energetic, funny and inspiring show, Jeff shows his incredible vocal range and power on more than 40 of the best popular songs from 60's-70's Pop Rock, Musical Theatre and Jazz, while telling the story of how he transitioned from Sports to Science to finally make it on the Stage. There will be three performances only on September 20 (special gala), 21 and 22, 2012 to launch the season.
Outside of the home season in Barrie, Talk Is Free Theatre and Birdland Theatre’s Dora award winning co-production of John Weidman and Stephen Sondheim’s Assassins will be seen as the anchor event of the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre’s SondheimFest in January 2013 in Winnipeg. Directed by Adam Brazier who has since been named Artistic Director of Toronto’s Theatre 20, Assassins previously played for two sold out runs at Toronto’s Theatre Centre in 2010 and 2011. It will be seen at the Tom Hendry Theatre/Warehouse from January 16 to February 2, 2013. Announcement of other destinations for the production are expected to follow shortly.
TIFT has also commissioned a new work from director Marti Maraden and actor Lucy Peacock, entitled Chekhov’s Notebook. They will collaborate on selecting existing passages from Chekhov`s novellas, short stories, major plays and one act gems to weave together a new narrative. Interspersed with newly commissioned musical numbers, the project will explore Anton Chekhov as a doctor, which was his first profession before he became a major playwright.
“I am delighted to be able to encompass so many different angles and priorities in our upcoming year,” says Artistic Producer Arkady Spivak. “As always our preference is to risk on the unknown and lesser tried programming as much as possible, but with the absolute faith in the brilliant acting company as well as in the bold directorial visions that we have been very fortunate to attract.”
Early-bird subscriptions for the 2012-2013 Season will be available until Friday, June 1, 2012. For more information please visit www.tift.ca or call (705) 792-1949. All performances are held at the new Mady Centre for the Performing Arts, 1 Dunlop St. West in Barrie, Ontario.

“The idea of performing on the bus initially came to us when we didn’t have a permanent home,” says Arkady Spivak, TIFT’s Artistic Producer. “And although we are about to receive a rare gift - a state of the art brand new facility, this production had developed a legacy of its own and simply demanded to be seen again. And to think that the revival gets to extend again is something truly special.”
Tales of an Urban Indian was initially scheduled to run from May 9 to May 21, 2011, but has already been extended to June 4. Single tickets are $29 plus HST and 4 tickets are $105 plus HST. Group rate for 15 individuals or more is also available at $25 plus HST. Tickets may be purchased by calling the Box Office at (705) 792-1949. New building, two World Premieres and two rarely seen plays are on tap for TIFT’s 10th Season.
Barrie, ON… Today Artistic Producer Arkady Spivak announced the details of the upcoming anniversary season for Talk Is Free Theatre (TIFT), which sees the ensemble-driven company continuing its policy of mounting new and neglected work in Barrie. The season will also launch the new venue, The Downtown Theatre, a 100-seat purpose built facility.
The season will begin with the new production of Aleksei Arbuzov’s Do You Turn Somersaults?, translated by Ariadne Nicolaeff. Set in 1968 in a sanatorium on the shores of the Baltic, Do You Turn Somersaults? is a touching story of hope and compassion with abundant humor, proving that love can blossom in the most unlikely of places, at the most unlikely of times. One of Canada’s most renowned directors, Marti Maraden, will stage the work. The production will play from November 17 to 26, 2011, with the Opening Night on November 18, 2011.
The season will continue with a rarely seen musical, No Way to Treat a Lady with book, music and lyrics by Douglas J. Cohen, based on the novel by William Goldman, which was a popular 1968 movie starring Rod Steiger. This theatrically charged musical comedy thriller is about a publicity crazed actor turned killer and the befuddled, but endearing detective who pursues him. Fresh from his directing triumph with Stephen Sondheim’s Assassins for TIFT and Birdland Theatre, new Theatre 20’s Artistic Director Adam Brazier returns to helm this production. Starring Steve Ross, it will run from February 2 to February 11, 2012, with an Opening Night on Friday, February 3, 2012.
The World Premiere musical version of Great Expectations will run from March 29 to April 7, 2012, opening on Friday, March 30, 2012. When Charles Dickens wrote "Great Expectations" in 1860, it dealt with a world where owning property defined one's success. But how has that changed in 150 years? Richard Ouzounian's special adaptation of this work deals with how the times we live in have changed and that the way we measure triumph has transformed as well. Add this to a unique version that has four actors tell the entire story over a period of 200 years, and does so using the actual music of the passing times makes for a work as intellectually stimulating as it is theatrically exciting. Great Expectations will be directed by seven time TIFT veteran Ouzounian and will star newcomer Justin Goodhand.
The season will conclude with the World Premiere of Parkdale Peter Pan by Eric Woolfe. It is an adaptation of JM Barrie’s seminal work, which begins in modern day Canada, and journeys to the timelessness of the Never Land and back again. Parkdale Peter Pan is performed by two actors, one as Wendy, one as Peter, with the remainder of the characters brought to life with colourful masks, puppets and magic tricks. The production will be directed by Nina Lee Aquino and will star Colin Doyle as Peter Pan. It will run from May 31 to June 9, 2012 and will open on Friday, June 1, 2012.
In addition to the upcoming season, Talk Is Free Theatre is hosting the annual Professional Association of Canadian Theatres (PACT) Conference and the AGM from May 26-29, 2011 as well as preparing various projects for transfers and touring. The company also has two exciting new projects in development.
Early-bird subscriptions for the 2011-2012 Season will be available until Friday, May 27, 2011. For more information please visit www.tift.ca or call (705) 792-1949.
